I just got a steel string Martin Backpacker. I'm one of the people who loves this little funky guitar.
However, originally I wanted the nylon string version, but changed my mind in the store because 1. they didn't have a nylon backpacker and 2. I've only played a nylon stringed once for about ten minutes at the store, and I don't know enough about the sound/ tuning/ quirks to know if I would like one or not.
I have 30 days to return the guitar for a refund or an exchange, and I'm seriously considering swapping for a nylon string. But, I'm not sure. I know that I like this one, but I think that I would like the sound of the nylon strings better... So, if anyone plays a nylon string guitar I would love some insight as to the differences and what to consider when choosing.

Today's British Antarctic Survey Penguin of the day is a chinstrap penguin chick and its parent. (The photo focuses on the parent, but this is a very cute baby bird.)

The Cleveland Zoo is home to two very active red panda babies. I saw them today and they are very cute, and very, very busy.

Some of you may remember my Kitten's Guide pictures and articles. Well, here’s the baby lamb equivalent. Next year’s spring fashions from the sheepwalks of Paris. Will ears be up or down this year? Will fleeces be long and curly, white or brown? Click the link and find out. Yes, cute baby lamb pictures from haut couturier, Jean Paul GoatHair.

Hi there. I'm primarily a bassist, though I do also play guitar, cello and Arabic oud. Coming from a cello background and loving melodic bass, I tend to be drawn to instruments in the bass and cello ranges. I currently have a cheapie Epiphone Les Paul tuned CGDFAE, but I'm unhappy with the tone of the low C and G strings.

I've been thinking of buying a guitar and tuning it primarily to fifths. I thought a baritone-scale guitar might be best suited to the task since it would impart a great deal of tension to the low strings. Remembering that Agile guitars tend to be inexpensive and rated fairly well, I took a look at their newest models. Turns out that they make eight string guitars now!

Now, I'm not interested in playing down-tuned metal (though I do love me some Meshuggah and Sunn O)))). I'm currently playing guitar in a drum-machine-driven shoegazy/fuzzy project that mixes sparkly clean and high-gain fuzz tones. My interest in having an extended-range instrument is being able to switch between bass function and lead function with little effort. I'd also like to be able to do a little tasteful two-hand tapping a-la a Warr guitar.

The eight-string guitars sold by Agile have a 28+ inch scale length which should provide plenty of tension for the low strings. I'm interested in trying tunings such as C c G g D d A a (a mandocello-like tuning with octave-doubled strings and super-thin high-A string!), F A C E G D A E (close-spaced bass strings for interesting drone possibilities and violin-like melody strings), and E B E G D G B E (nice big droney open chords).

Now, since I'm interested in tapping, I'll need a very stable and adjustable neck in order to allow me to dial in a low and buzz-free action. I'm interested in clear and present tones that respond well to distortion when necessary.

Any thoughts? Should I look elsewhere? Has anyone here played extended-range instruments for a while and kinda stopped doing so for some reason or another?

As I think we all know, the most delicious food in the world to nom on is baby animal feet. It appears the baby animals themselves agree with us.

I'm not sure if this is the place for this type of question, but if it isnt feel free to delete me or point me in the right direction.

I have to play Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) tomorrow for class (as a final) and I am having trouble with it. My instructor wants me to play along with the song while it's playing in windows media player at the slowest speed it can go (.5). I still can't do it!

I can't seem to differentiate the chords while just listening. Any pointers, tips, etc? Thanks in advance!
